The Kekumano Award & Scholarship Benefit Dinner celebrates and perpetuates the spirit of service to others and giving back to the community. That spirit is personified in our 2017 honoree, Maj. Gen. Darryll D.M. Wong has served his country, his state, his community and his alma mater with distinction throughout his life. At Maryknoll School, he was a star basketball player, Civil Air Patrol Squadron Commander, and student body vice president.
While on active duty in the Air Force, he flew C-141s worldwide. In the Hawaii Air National
Guard, he rose to become Commander General. He was an Aloha Airlines pilot for more than 32 years.
From 2011 to 2015, he was Adjutant General of the State of Hawaii, overseeing the training of 5,500 soldiers and airmen of the Hawaii National Guard.
He was also the Director of State Civil Defense in charge of emergency management for the State of Hawaii and Homeland Security Advisor to the Governor.
He serves on the Maryknoll School Board, the National Youth Challenge Academy Foundation, FEMA National Advisory Council, the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies Foundation, the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation of Hawaii and the Homeless Veterans Advisory Council. He is a member of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and continues to be a strong supporter of Hawaii Special Olympics. In addition, he has coached both basketball and volleyball at Maryknoll and in the community.
His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award and the Hawaii State Law Enforcement Association’s Military Officer of the Year Award.
Today, he is the Director of the Pacific Region for Sierra Nevada Corporation, Senior Advisor to the University of Hawaii Applied Research Lab, and Chairman of the Board and one of the founders of the Hawaii Exemplary State Foundation, which focuses on using a system of systems approach to providing solutions to building sustainable communities to include engaging K-12 schools in promoting STEM, science that matters, research and education.
